Women’s Basketball: Macalester Edged by Augsburg in Home Finale, 64-58

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College women's basketball team closed out its home schedule with a 64-58 loss to Augsburg College Wednesday evening in the Leonard Center. The Scots fall to 10-14 overall and 4-13 in conference play, while the Auggies improve to 14-10, 7-10 MIAC.

The first half was close throughout, with Macalester taking a 22-21 edge on a three-pointer from junior forward Leah Gray (San Rafael, Calif./Branson School) just before the end of the first quarter. Senior guard Lauren Clamage (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest Academy) carried the Scots with 15 points in the quarter, including four threes. Early in the second quarter, Augsburg used an 11-1 run to lead 32-25 with 5:20 left in the half. Macalester responded by closing out the half with a 7-3 run that made the halftime score 35-32 Auggies.

Augsburg tried to put the game away early in the second half by scoring the first eight points of the third quarter in a 12-2 run that resulted in a 47-34 lead. Macalester closed the gap to eight before the visitors pushed the lead back up to 14, 53-39 at the end of the quarter.

The deficit was 12, 58-46 with 4:27 remaining when the Scots made one last push. Threes from junior guard Vivi Gregorich (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) and first year guard Holly Hull (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley NW) sparked a 10-1 run that made it a three-point game, 59-56 with a minute remaining. But Macalester was 1-of-4 from the field the rest of the way, and Augsburg made 3-of-4 from the charity stripe down the stretch to clinch the win.

The Scots held the Auggies to 29.0 percent shooting for the game, but Augsburg scored 23 second chance points while grabbing 20 offensive rebounds, and converted 21 Macalester turnovers into 21 points.

Clamage finished with 17 points and two assists, while junior center Regan Fruh (Helena, Mont./Helena) recorded 15 points, six rebounds and three blocks. First year guard Tyana Loiselle (Bloomer, Wis./Chippewa Falls) had six assists to go with four points, five rebounds and two blocks. Senior forward Park Masterson (Poway, Calif./Poway) grabbed a team-best nine rebounds. Tamira McLemore led the Auggies with 17 points.

Macalester wraps up the 2016-17 campaign at Hamline University on Saturday, Feb. 18. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn.
