ST. PAUL, Minn.- The Macalester College women's basketball team beat Concordia College for their second win of the year and their first conference victory. The Scots won 60-58 and are now 2-3 on the season.
In the close win over the Cobbers, the Scots won with .01 seconds on the clock with two free throws from sophomore guard
Tyana Loiselle (Bloomer, Wis./Chippewa Falls). Along with the win, Macalester's own
Regan Fruh (Helena, Mont. / Helena) scored her career 1,000
th point in the fourth quarter. Fruh is now 10
th in Macalester's all-time scoring records.
The visiting Cobbers took a large lead in the first quarter leading by as much as 10 points. But the Scots came back in the second out scoring Concordia 18-8 and went into halftime leading by two points. The second half saw the Scots and Cobbers trading buckets for most of the remainder of the game. Heading into the fourth quarter the Scots were down three points but took the lead four times in the quarter. With just under a minute to play the score was all tied up at 59-58. Concordia's Jamie Mentzer's layup was blocked by Fruh with .06 seconds left on the clock. Macalester was able inbound the ball after a Scot's timeout and after the foul, Loiselle made both free-throws to get the Macalester win.
Fruh led Macalester with a 26 points, eight rebounds and three blocks. Sophomore guard
Holly Hull (Overland Park, Kan/Blue Valley Northwest) had 10 points and six rebounds. Loiselle was instrumental in the success of the Macalester offense with 10 assists and two points.
Concordia was led by Mira Ellefson who totaled 13 points on the night.
Macalester will return to the road for their second MIAC game on Wednesday, Dec. 06 in St. Joseph, Minn. at 7:00 p.m.
