ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's soccer team will take on top-seeded St. Thomas in the championship game of the MIAC playoffs on Saturday, Nov. 4, beginning at 1:00 p.m. at St. Thomas' South Field. The third-seeded Scots (12-5-2) earned a spot in the final with a pair of wins this week.
On Tuesday, Macalester hosted Carleton in the quarterfinals and came away with a 1-0 victory. Junior defender
Clayton Smith (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) headed home a free kick from senior midfielder
Jake Burke (Dublin, Ireland/Shattuck St. Mary's) in the 56th minute for the game's only goal. Then in Wednesday's semifinal match at second-seeded Gustavus, junior midfielder
Seth Kofman (Moraga, Calif./Campolindo) scored off a pass from first year forward
Floyd Krom (Naaldwijk, Netherlands/UWC-Costa Rica) in the 30th minute, as the Scots beat the Gusties, 1-0 in St. Peter, Minn.
Junior goalkeeper
Colton Wenig (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) recorded shutouts in both victories, making two saves against Carleton and one at Gustavus.
Saturday's game at St. Thomas (18-1), ranked fifth nationally, is a rematch of the 2016 championship game that saw St. Thomas edge the Scots, 1-0. Earlier this season, the Tommies scored with just 11 seconds remaining in the second overtime to beat Macalester, 1-0 on Sept. 30 at Macalester Stadium. St. Thomas advanced to the finals after defeating Hamline, 3-0 in Wednesday's other semifinal match.
Tickets for Saturday's game at St. Thomas' South Field are $7 for adults and $3 for students. Children five and under are free. The first 100 Macalester students who present a valid Mac ID at the door will be admitted free courtesy of Macalester Athletics.
