BELOIT, Wis. – The Macalester College men's basketball team opened the 2017-18 campaign with a 90-68 defeat at Beloit College Saturday afternoon at Flood Arena.
The Scots shot 47.3 percent from the field and made 11-of 14 from the free throw line, but could not overcome a barrage of 14 three-pointers by Beloit, including eight in the second half.
The Buccaneers broke open a close game late in the first half with seven straight points for a 40-28 lead with 2:43 on the clock. Junior forward
Wyatt Ferm (Farmington, Minn./Farmington) hit a pair of free throws and a jumper in the final minute to make the halftime score 40-32 Beloit. Ferm had 11 points and six rebounds in the first half, while senior guard
Gunnar Goeden (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) and first year forward
Jackson Henningfield (Lake Mary, Fla./Lyman) each had eight points.
A 7-0 run to open the second half pushed the Beloit lead to 46-32. The Scots responded with a 9-4 run of their own, including five points from Goeden, to cut the deficit to nine, 50-41 with 14:34 to play. But the Buccaneers made seven threes in a 10-minute span in building a commanding 86-58 advantage with 2:07 remaining.
Goeden led Macalester with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field. Henningfield tallied 14 points in his collegiate debut, while Ferm finished with 13 points and eight rebounds. Beloit's Darin Empereur led all players with 17 points, including four three-pointers. Cody Risseeuw scored all 15 of his points from three-point range and added 10 rebounds, as the Buccaneers out-rebounded the Scots, 39-26.
Macalester will play its first home game of the season on Tuesday, Nov. 21 against the University of Northwestern. The non-conference game tips off at 7:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
