ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's basketball team fell to the University of Northwestern, 66-55 in a non-conference game Tuesday night in the Leonard Center. The Scots are now 0-2 on the season, while the Eagles improve to 1-3.
Macalester jumped out to an 8-4 edge, with first year forward
Jackson Henningfield (Lake Mary, Fla./Lyman) scoring all eight points for the Scots. Northwestern held Macalester to just 11 points for the rest of the first half in building a 34-19 halftime lead. Neither team shot the ball well in the first 20 minutes, with the Eagles making 38.9 percent from the field compared to 28.0 percent for the Scots.
Early in the second half, Northwestern pushed the lead to as many as 21 points before Macalester fought to get back in the game. With the Eagles leading 52-32 with 10:33 to play, the Scots used three-pointers by junior forward
Wyatt Ferm (Farmington, Minn./Farmington), sophomore guard
Nathan Davies (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) and first year guard
Aidan Toner-Rodgers (Sebastopol, Calif./Analy) to spark a 15-4 run that cut the deficit to nine, 56-47 with 6:39 remaining.
The Scots had an opportunity to reduce the Eagles' lead on their next possession, but a missed three-pointer followed by a three from Isaiah Rahier stopped Macalester's momentum and put Northwestern up 59-47. Senior guard
Brett Olson (New London, Minn./New London-Spicer) answered with a layup, but that's as close as Macalester would get the rest of the way, as the Eagles held on to win.
Two first years led the way offensively, as Henningfield finished with a team-high 14 points to go with four rebounds, and Toner-Rodgers made three three-pointers and scored 11 points. Ferm registered 10 points, eight rebounds, five assists, four steals and a block. Olson tallied all 10 of his points in the second half. Rahier and Caleb Hageman each had 14 points to pace Northwestern.
Macalester hosts Northland College in another non-conference game on Monday, Nov. 29. The game is set to start at 7:45 p.m. following the women's basketball game against Northwestern in the Leonard Center.
