ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's soccer team will host a quarterfinal match against Carleton College in the MIAC playoffs on Tuesday, Oct. 31 beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Macalester Stadium. The Scots (10-5-2) are the No. 3 seed after finishing the regular season with a 7-3 record in league play.
Macalester is coming off back-to-back losses to Saint John's and Gustavus that dropped the Scots into a tie for second place with the Gusties. Gustavus gets the No. 2 seed in the MIAC Playoffs due to Saturday's 2-0 shutout of Macalester in St. Peter, Minn. Prior to last week, the Scots' only other loss in the conference was to St. Thomas, who was a perfect 10-0 en route to the MIAC regular-season title.
Senior midfielder
Jake Burke (Dublin, Ireland/Shattuck St. Mary's) leads Macalester with four goals and six assists for 14 points, ranking seventh in the conference in assists and 12th in points. Senior midfielder
Zach Moore (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah) also has four goals, while senior forward
Danny Baumann (Waterford, Wis./Muskego) has three goals and three assists for nine points. Junior goalkeeper
Colton Wenig (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) has been solid in goal, ranking second in the MIAC in goals-against average (0.59) and shutouts (six).
Earlier this season, the Scots defeated Carleton, 2-1 in overtime on Sept. 22 at Macalester Stadium. Tashi Tsering scored for the Knights on a free kick in the 75th minute, but Baumann found the net less than three minutes later to tie the score at 1-1. Just 3:43 into the first overtime period, Moore blasted a shot from 25 yards out into the left side of the net. Trevor Freeland has six goals on the season to lead Carleton (10-7-1), which placed sixth in the MIAC with a 4-5-1 record.
Tuesday's other quarterfinal game features fourth-seeded Hamline hosting fifth-seeded Saint John's, also at 2:00 p.m. Following the quarterfinal round, the lowest remaining seed will visit top-seeded St. Thomas on Wednesday, Nov. 1 at 11:30 a.m., while the highest remaining seed will play at Gustavus on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. The semifinal winners will meet in the championship game on Saturday, Nov. 4 at the highest remaining seed. The MIAC Tournament champion receives an automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament.
