Men’s Soccer: Saint John’s Upends No. 18 Macalester, 2-1

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's soccer team dropped a MIAC game to Saint John's University, 2-1 in the final regular-season home game Tuesday night at Macalester Stadium. The Scots fall to 10-4-2 overall and 7-2 in the conference, while the Johnnies improve to 6-7-2, 3-4-2 MIAC.

Just 3:24 into the game, Macalester jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by senior midfielder Zach Moore (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah). The play started down the right side, with sophomore midfielder Nick Moore (Georgetown, Mass./Governor's Academy) sending the ball forward to senior midfielder Jake Burke (Dublin, Ireland/Shattuck-St. Mary's). Burke beat his defender and found Zach Moore alone in the penalty area for an open goal.

In the 19th minute, Saint John's pulled even with a goal by Daniel Bruckbauer, who one-timed a free kick from Tyler Street inside the right post. Midway through the second half, the Johnnies took a 2-1 lead when Zach Boerjan scored off an assist from Rene Cabrera. The Scots pressed for the equalizer, taking six shots over the final 20 minutes. But Saint John's held on, handing Macalester its first loss since Sept. 30 and ending a five-game unbeaten streak.

The Scots controlled play for most of the game, creating several scoring chances and keeping possession. Macalester took 23 shots and put nine on goal, compared to seven shots for the Johnnies. Junior goalkeeper Colton Wenig (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) recorded two saves, while Payton Spencer had eight saves for Saint John's.

The game marked the final regular-season home game for Macalester's 12 seniors.

The Scots conclude regular season on Saturday, Oct. 28 at Gustavus. A Macalester win or tie gives the Scots second place and a bye in the first round of the MIAC Playoffs. A win by the Gusties clinches second place and the bye for Gustavus. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in St. Peter, Minn.
