NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Macalester College women's basketball team made 13 three-pointers to defeat St. Olaf College on the road, 82-78 in a MIAC game Saturday afternoon at the Skoglund Center. The win gives the Scots an 8-5 record on the season, including a 2-4 mark in conference play. The Oles fall to 5-8, 1-5 MIAC.
Macalester trailed by as many as seven points in the second quarter before threes from senior guard
Lauren Clamage (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest Acad.) and junior guard
Vivi Gregorich (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) ignited a 10-2 run that gave the Scots a 24-23 edge. St. Olaf briefly regained the lead before Macalester closed out the quarter with a 15-5 run to take a 41-34 advantage into the halftime break. Clamage had three three-pointers and Gregorich and junior forward
Leah Gray (San Rafael, Calif./Branson School) each had two, as the Scots were 8-of-16 from beyond the arc in the first half.
Macalester held a 53-48 lead with 4:24 left in the third quarter when the Oles used an 8-2 run to regain the lead, 56-55 with 2:07 to play in the quarter. Gregorich and Gray both made three-pointers as the Scots were able to take a 62-60 lead into the final quarter. Four points apiece from Gregorich and Clamage to start the fourth pushed Macalester's advantage to 70-62. The Scots still led by eight, 74-66 with under five minutes to play, but St. Olaf used threes from Margaret Anderson, Ella Skrien and Michelle Lother to come as close as two points. Clutch free throw shooting down the stretch allowed Macalester to hold off the Oles and match its win total from last year with its eighth win of the season.
Clamage led all players with 23 points while making 3-of-8 from three-point range. She also added three steals. Gregorich was 5-of-15 from long distance en route to 22 points, with Gray connecting for four threes and 18 points, to go with six rebounds and six assists. Senior forward
Park Masterson (Poway, Calif./Poway) grabbed a team-best nine rebounds, while junior center
Regan Fruh (Helena, Mont./Helena) tallied four steals to go with six points. Makenna Ash led the Oles with 16 points.
As a team, the Scots ended up making 13 of their 32 three-point attempts (40.2 percent) compared to 10-of-27 (37.0 percent) for St. Olaf. The performance marks the team's most three-pointers made this century, eclipsing last year's effort against Bethany Lutheran in which the Scots hit 12 threes.
Macalester continues MIAC play with a home game against the College of Saint Benedict on Wednesday, Jan. 11. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
