ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College women's basketball team fell to the College of Saint Benedict, 75-51 in an MIAC game Wednesday night in the Leonard Center. The loss leaves the Scots with an 8-6 record overall and a 2-5 mark in the conference, while the Blazers improve to 9-5, 5-2 MIAC.
Seven points from senior guard
Lauren Clamage (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest Acad.) helped Macalester take a 14-13 lead after one quarter. But the Scots scored just two points over the first eight minutes of the second quarter, as Saint Benedict built a 32-16 advantage to take control. Leah Gray (San Rafael, Calif./Branson School) cut the deficit to 13, 35-22 at the half. Macalester shot just 29.2 percent from the field in the first half compared to 42.9 percent for the Blazers.
Momentum stayed with the visitors into the third quarter, as Saint Ben's led 53-31 following a three by Sidney Schiffler at the 5:37 mark. Three points apiece by juniors
Regan Fruh (Helena, Mont./Helena) and
Vivi Gregorich (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) sparked an 8-2 run to close out the quarter, as the Scots trailed 55-39. But Macalester never came closer than 16 points in the final quarter, as the Blazers earned the victory.
Clamage led the Scots in scoring for the fourth straight game with 14 points. Gregorich added 11 points, while senior forward
Park Masterson (Poway, Calif./Poway) registered 11 rebounds. Gray helped out on defense with three blocks. Alison Newton, who led all players with 16 points, was one of four Blazers to score in double figures.
Macalester hosts MIAC foe Hamline on Saturday, Jan. 14. The game starts at 1:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
