ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College women's basketball team fell to fourth-ranked St. Thomas, 71-48 in a MIAC contest Wednesday evening at Schoenecker Arena. With the loss, the Scots drop to 9-9 overall and 3-8 in league play, while the Tommies remain unbeaten at 17-0, 11-0 MIAC.
In a competitive first quarter, Macalester used baskets from junior guard
Vivi Gregorich (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) and first year guard
Tyana Loiselle (Bloomer, Wis./Chippewa Falls) to pull within one, 18-17 with two minutes left. Five straight points, capped by a three-pointer from Lauren Fischer, pushed the lead back to 23-17 at the end of one. St. Thomas increased its advantage in the second quarter to as many as 14 points before taking a 38-26 halftime lead.
The Tommies put the game out of reach in the third quarter with a 22-9 run that made the score 60-35 late in the quarter. Macalester shot 34.0 percent from the field for the game compared to 46.3 percent for St. Thomas, which held a 40-26 advantage in rebounds.
Gregorich led the Scots with 12 points, while Loiselle tallied a career-high 11 points to go with five rebounds. Fischer, Kaitlin Langer and Lucia Renikoff each scored 13 points for St. Thomas.
Macalester continues MIAC play with a road game at Bethel University on Saturday, Jan. 28. The game begins at 1:00 p.m. in Roseville, Minn.
