ST. PETER, Minn. – The Macalester College women's basketball team fell to unbeaten Gustavus Adolphus, 103-70 in a MIAC contest Saturday afternoon at Gus Young Court. The Scots drop to 9-8 overall and 3-7 in league play, while the Gusties, who are ranked 22nd nationally, improve to 17-0, 10-0 MIAC.
Gustavus broke open a close game by closing out the first quarter with an 11-4 run to lead 33-21. Momentum stayed with the hosts into the second quarter, as the Gusties started the second period with seven straight points to push the lead to 19, 40-21. The bulge grew to as many as 23 points before a three-pointer and a jumper by junior guard
Vivi Gregorich (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) before halftime made the score 60-42 Gustavus at the break. Macalester shot 59.3 percent from the field, but the Gusties topped that, making 64.7 percent from the floor in the first half.
Gustavus did not let up in the second half, outscoring the Scots 43-28 while limiting Macalester to 28.6 percent shooting from the field after halftime. The win completed the season sweep for the Gusties, who beat Macalester, 81-60 on Dec. 3 in St. Paul earlier this season.
Gregorich paced the Scots with 14 points and four rebounds, while first year guard
Holly Hull (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley NW) added 11 points in 18 minutes off the bench. Senior guard
Lauren Clamage (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest Acad.) contributed 10 points and two steals. Miranda Rice led all players with 26 points.
Macalester returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 25 against the MIAC's other ranked team, No. 4 St. Thomas. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. at St. Thomas.
