Men’s Soccer: Cassutt Scores Twice in Win Over Concordia, 3-0

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Junior midfielder Elliot Cassutt (Minneapolis, Minn./South) had a pair of goals to lead the sixth-ranked Macalester College men's soccer team to a 3-0 triumph over visiting Concordia College in a MIAC game Saturday afternoon at Macalester Stadium. The Scots improve to 6-0-1 overall and 2-0 in league play, while the Cobbers fall to 2-3-1, 0-2 MIAC.

Cassutt opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, following his own shot that was initially saved by Concordia goalkeeper Ben Glogoza and knocking in the rebound for a 1-0 lead. In the second half, Cassutt received a long pass up the middle from junior midfielder Max Abramson (Del Mar, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy), beat his defender and placed a shot under Glogoza and into the net for his second goal of the game. Cassutt, who did not score in his first season at Macalester, now has three goals in 2016, including two game-winning tallies.

With the Scots carrying play for most of the game, senior midfielder Charlie Spurr (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) made it 3-0 with a blast from the left about 20 yards out that curled around Glogoza and into the right corner of the goal in the 77th minute. Macalester held a 20-3 advantage in shots, with Glogoza making 11 saves.

Senior goalkeeper Zeke Vainer (Melrose, Mass./Melrose) had one save on the day in recording his fourth consecutive shutout and fifth clean sheet of the season. He now has 26 shutouts in his standout career at Macalester.

The Scots play a non-conference game against Luther College on Wednesday, Sept. 21, beginning at 7:00 p.m. in Decorah, Iowa.
