ST. PETER, Minn. – Junior midfielder
Jake Burke (Dublin, Ireland/Shattuck-St. Mary's) scored the game-winning goal in the 95th minute to give the sixth-ranked Macalester College men's soccer team a 1-0 victory at Gustavus Adolphus Wednesday afternoon at the Gusties Soccer Field. The win came in the MIAC opener for the Scots, who are now 5-0-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play. The Gusties drop to 1-6, 0-1 MIAC.
After a scoreless 90 minutes, Macalester put seven shots on goal compared to three for Gustavus but were unable to get on the scoreboard, sending the game into overtime. Less than five minutes into the first extra session, Gusties' goalkeeper Anders Severson came off his line to defend a play and ended up out of position. Burke took advantage, scoring the golden goal in a key conference win on the road. It was the second overtime game-winner this season for Burke, who found the net in a 1-0 overtime win against UW-Superior on Sept. 1.
Senior goalkeeper
Zeke Vainer (Melrose, Mass./Melrose) registered three saves, all in the second half, for his fourth shutout in six games this season. Severson finished with seven saves for Gustavus.
The Scots continue MIAC play with a home game against Concordia on Saturday, Sept. 17. Game time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Macalester Stadium.
