ST. PAUL, Minn. – Junior midfielder
Jake Burke (Dublin, Ireland/Shattuck-St. Mary's) found the net in the 97th minute to give the Macalester College men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over visiting UW-Superior Thursday night at Macalester Stadium. The Scots, who are ranked 20th nationally, open the 2016 season 1-0, while the Yellowjackets are now 0-1.
After two scoreless halves that saw UW-Superior hold a slight 7-6 edge in shots, the game went into overtime. Just over six minutes into the first overtime period, junior forward
Danny Baumann (Waterford, Wis./Muskego) deflected the ball out of a scrum in front of the goal towards Burke on the right side. Burke made no mistake, burying a shot from about eight yards out into the goal to end the game in the Scots' favor. The timely goal is Burke's first career game-winner at Macalester.
Two-time All-MIAC goalkeeper
Zeke Vainer (Melrose, Mass./Melrose) made three saves for his 22nd career shutout. Ben Wilhelm had two saves for the Yellowjackets.
Macalester takes on 19th-ranked UW-Whitewater on Saturday, Sept. 3. The non-conference game begins at 3:00 p.m. in Whitewater, Wis.
