Baseball: Macalester Splits MIAC Doubleheader with Hamline

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Sophomore Nick McMullen (Payson, Ariz./Payson) had seven hits in eight at-bats as the Macalester College baseball team split a doubleheader against Hamline University Wednesday at Nicholson Field. The Scots, who dropped the first game, 6-2 before winning 9-4, are now 9-5 overall and 1-3 in conference play. The Pipers are now 12-8, 2-2 MIAC.

After Macalester fell behind 1-0 early in Game 1, McMullen doubled home senior Nick Sia (Crofton, Md./South River) in the bottom of the third to tie the score. Then in the fourth, junior Quentin Stuart (Nashville, Ind./Indiana Academy) came home when sophomore Chance Carnahan (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) got into a rundown to put the Scots on top, 2-1. The Pipers answered with four runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to lead 6-2.

McMullen, Stuart and sophomore Ben Castagnetti (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) each had two hits for Macalester. First year pitcher Cole Chang (Pleasantville, N.Y./Collegiate School) started and allowed five runs on five hits while walking three in 4 2/3 innings to take the loss. Hamline reliever Aaron Stoneberg blanked the Scots over four innings to earn the win.

In the second game, Macalester again spotted the Pipers a 1-0 lead before putting three runs on the board in the bottom of the second. First year Jared Abelson (Herndon, Va./South Lakes) brought home sophomore Alex Baretta (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) with a sacrifice fly, then McMullen hit a two-run double for a 3-1 lead. Castagnetti plated Stuart with a single in the third, then Baretta delivered a two-run single in the fifth for a 6-1 advantage. McMullen singled in a run in the sixth, while Stuart and Baretta drove in runs in the eighth.

McMullen went 5-for-5 in Game 2 with two doubles, three runs batted in and two stolen bases. Stuart added two hits, including a double, while Baretta had three RBIs.

On the mound, junior Dylan Edwards-Gaherty (New York, N.Y./Columbia Grammar) gave up three runs, one earned, on seven hits while fanning three and walking one in 7 2/3 innings of work.

Macalester was scheduled to play a non-conference doubleheader against UW-Superior at home on Thursday, Apr. 7, but the games have been postponed. The Scots' next scheduled games are on Saturday, Apr. 9 at Augsburg for a MIAC doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
