ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College women's basketball team lost a MIAC game to Gustavus Adolphus, 81-60 Saturday afternoon in the Leonard Center. The Scots fall to 4-3 overall and 0-2 in the conference with the loss, while the Gusties remain unbeaten at 7-0, 2-0 MIAC.
Gustavus led by as many as 10 points in the first quarter before a pair of threes by senior guard
Lauren Clamage (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest Academy) cut the deficit to four, 20-16 early in the second quarter. The visitors pushed the lead back up to 10, but a three-pointer from junior forward
Leah Gray (San Rafael, Calif./Branson School) and a four-point play by Clamage sparked a 10-2 Macalester run that made the score 32-30 Gustavus with two minutes left in the first half. The Gusties closed out the half with an 8-1 run to take a 40-31 advantage into halftime.
In the second half, momentum stayed with Gustavus, who maintained at least an 11-point lead throughout the third quarter. A three-pointer by Mikayla Miller at the end of the quarter put the Gusties ahead, 65-45. The Scots used a 9-0 run midway through the fourth quarter, sparked by a three from junior guard
G.G. Gunther (San Francisco, Calif./Lowell), to cut the lead to 73-59 with 2:49 remaining. That's as close as Macalester would get, as Gustavus scored the final six points of the game in the 81-60 win.
The Scots made a season-high nine three-pointers, but the Gusties were 10-of-14 from beyond the arc and shot 53.6 percent from the floor overall. Junior center
Regan Fruh (Helena, Mont./Helena) tallied 13 points and six rebounds, while Clamage finished with three three-pointers and 12 points. Senior forward
Park Masterson (Poway, Calif./Poway) added eight points, and junior guard
Grace Dickman (Maspeth, N.Y./Cate School) delivered five assists. Miranda Rice led all players with 22 points for Gustavus.
Macalester hosts Carleton on Wednesday, Dec. 7 in another MIAC contest. The game tips off at 7:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
