ST. PAUL, Minn. – Junior guard
Vivi Gregorich (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) scored a career-high 23 points as the Macalester College women's basketball team downed Carleton College, 68-58 Wednesday evening in the Leonard Center. The Scots improve to 5-3 overall and 1-2 in the conference, while the Knights drop to 1-5, 0-3 MIAC.
Macalester took control of the game early with a 19-5 run over the first seven minutes and 30 seconds. Junior center
Regan Fruh (Helena, Mont./Helena) tallied nine points in the run. The lead was 13, 29-16 with 4:41 left in the second quarter when Carleton went on a 10-3 run to cut the deficit to 32-26. First year guard
Holly Hull (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley NW) hit a three-pointer, and senior center
Karen Rathjens (Sudbury, Mass./Beaver Day Country) scored down the stretch as the Scots took a 37-28 lead into the halftime break. Gregorich and Fruh each scored 11 points in the half.
Macalester dominated in the third quarter, extending the lead to as many as 22 points while outscoring Carleton, 19-10 to lead 56-38 after three. The Scots went up, 66-47 with 3:25 to play before the Knights reeled off 11 consecutive points to pull to within eight, 66-58 with 39 seconds remaining. But the comeback came too late, as Macalester earned its first MIAC win of the season.
Gregorich made three three-pointers and was 6-of-6 from the free throw line en route to a game-high 23 points. Fruh was 8-of-9 from the charity stripe and finished with 22 points, nine rebounds and two steals. Hull contributed eight points, six boards and three steals, with first year guard
Tyana Loiselle (Bloomer, Wis./Chippewa Falls) delivering six assists to go with five points. Katie Chavez led Carleton with 13 points and six assists.
Macalester continues MIAC play with a home game against Bethel University on Friday, Dec. 9. Game time is scheduled for 5:45 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
