Women’s Basketball: Macalester Opens MIAC Play with Loss to No. 8 St. Thomas

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College women's basketball team lost its first MIAC game of the season, 77-44 to No. 8 St. Thomas Wednesday night in the Leonard Center. The Scots fall to 4-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference, while the Tommies improve to 4-0, 1-0 MIAC.

St. Thomas jumped out to a 16-11 lead over the first nine minutes of the game before Macalester used a 9-2 run to lead, 20-18 with 8:22 left in the second quarter. Junior guard Vivi Gregorich (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) and first year guard Holly Hull (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley NW) hit threes for the Scots in the run. But the Tommies closed out the half with a 16-4 spree of their own to take a 34-24 advantage into halftime.

The lead would grow to as many as 27 points in the third quarter and 33 points in the final quarter, as the Tommies closed out the win. The visitors from Summit Avenue shot 47.7 percent from the floor for the game compared to 28.9 percent for Macalester.

Gregorich tallied 11 points and four assists for the Scots, with senior guard Lauren Clamage (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest Academy) adding 10 points. Senior forward Park Masterson (Poway, Calif./Poway) grabbed a game-high eight rebounds, with junior center Regan Fruh (Helena, Mont./Helena) contributing seven points, four boards and three steals. Gabby Zehrer led St. Thomas with 20 points.

Macalester continues its MIAC schedule with a home game against Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday, Dec. 3. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
