PASADENA, Calif. – The Macalester College women's basketball team concluded its California trip with a victory over Occidental College, 58-49 at the Caltech-Oxy Classic Saturday afternoon at Caltech. The Scots improve to 4-1 on the season, while the Tigers fall to 3-2.
Macalester opened the game with an 8-0 run, including six points from junior center
Regan Fruh (Helena, Mont./Helena), en route to a 9-4 lead after one quarter. The advantage grew to as many as 10 points for the Scots, who eventually took a 26-18 edge at the half. Fruh tallied 12 points and six rebounds in the half for Macalester, which held Occidental to 31.0 percent shooting from the field.
In the third quarter, the Scots stayed in control, extending the lead to as many as 13 points before taking a 39-30 lead at the end of the quarter. Junior forward
Leah Gray (San Rafael, Calif./Branson School) made two three-pointers and had eight points in the quarter. After Fruh and junior guard
Vivi Gregorich (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) each made two free throws to put Macalester ahead, 49-39, the Tigers used an 8-3 run to pull to within 52-47 with a minute remaining. But Gregorich went 6-for-6 at the free throw line down the stretch to clinch the Scots' second win in as many days in California.
Macalester went to the free throw line 34 times, making 23, compared to 13-of-18 for Occidental, which defeated St. Olaf 50-42 on Friday. Fruh ended up with a season-high 25 points to go with 13 rebounds to lead all players. Gray finished with 11 points and eight rebounds, while Gregorich was 8-of-8 from the line and scored 10 points. Tala Ismail recorded 10 points, 12 boards and three steals for Occidental.
Macalester opens MIAC play on Wednesday, Nov. 30 against St. Thomas at home. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
