GRINNELL, Iowa. – The Macalester College women's basketball team dropped a non-conference game at Grinnell College, falling 68-54 Saturday afternoon at Darby Gymnasium. The Scots are now 1-1 on the season, while the Pioneers improve to 1-1.
Grinnell opened the game with a 12-0 run in building a 17-5 lead by the end of the first quarter. The lead grew to as many as 19, 28-9 midway through the second quarter before the Scots battled back. A three-pointer by junior guard
G.G. Gunther (San Francisco, Calif./Lowell) sparked an 11-3 spree to close out the quarter and make the score 31-20 Grinnell at the half. Senior guard
Lauren Clamage (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) also hit a three in the run, as Macalester shot 25.0 percent from the field compared to 46.2 percent for the Pioneers in the first half.
The Scots were unable to make up any ground in the third quarter, as Grinnell still maintained an 11-point edge, 44-33 heading into the fourth. With Macalester trailing 56-42, junior center
Regan Fruh (Helena, Mont./Helena) scored all 11 points in an 11-3 run that brought the Scots to within six, 59-53 with 1:36 remaining. But Grinnell's Sophia Gatton drained a three with the shot clock winding down on the next possession, and Macalester never recovered. The Pioneers closed out the game with a 9-1 run for a 68-54 victory.
Fruh had another outstanding game, following up Friday's 20-point, eight rebound effort against Crown with 18 points, 10 rebounds and three steals. Senior forward
Park Masterson (Poway, Calif./Poway) registered 13 rebounds to go with six points, while Clamage finished with six points and four assists. Kayla Morrissey led Grinnell with 21 points, 10 rebounds and four assists.
Macalester returns to action with a non-league game at Martin Luther College on Monday, Nov. 21, beginning at 7:00 p.m. in New Ulm, Minn.
