Men’s Basketball: Macalester Downs Crown, 79-71

ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. – The Macalester College men's basketball team earned a 79-71 victory at Crown College in a non-conference game Friday night in the Wild Athletic Center. The Scots improve to 2-0 on the season, while the Storm open its season at 0-1.

Macalester scored the first 10 points of the game in leading by as many as 19 points in the first half. Sophomore guard Michael Gutierrez (Stillwater, Minn./St. Croix Prep Academy) scored 11 points in the first half, as the Scots took a 35-20 advantage into halftime. Macalester pushed its lead to as many as 24 points with 17 minutes remaining, with Crown reducing the lead to eight points late in the game. The Scots shot 44.1 percent from the floor and committed just seven turnovers for the game.

Senior center Kareem Ismail (Pasadena, Calif./Flintridge Prep) led Macalester with 24 points and eight rebounds, with Gutierrez adding 22 points and four assists while making all 11 of his attempts from the free throw line. Sophomore forward Wyatt Ferm (Farmington, Minn./Farmington) tallied 10 points, while sophomore forward Isaac Siegel (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) contributed six points, five rebounds and four assists. Crown's Timothy Wendel led all players with 30 points while making six threes.

Macalester plays another non-league game at the University of Northwestern on Tuesday, Nov. 22, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Roseville, Minn.
