Women's Basketball: Macalester Falls at No. 16 St. Thomas, 79-62

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College women's basketball team took on no. 16 ranked University of St. Thomas in Wednesday night MIAC action at Schoenecker Arena. The Tommies outscored the Scots 28-10 in the second quarter to ride out a lead and secure a 79-62 victory. Macalester drops to 7-11 overall and 2-9 in conference play while St. Thomas moves to 15-3 overall and 9-2 in the MIAC.
 
Macalester competed hard in the first quarter, holding the Tommies to just 14 points and scoring 11. The Scots were then outscored 50 to 22 in the next two quarters, entering the final ten minutes with a 31-point deficit.
 
The Scots battled back in the fourth, scoring a season-best 29 points and holding the Tommies to just 15. The comeback was sparked by eight quick points by sophomore forward Leah Gray (San Rafael, Calif. / Branson School) and seven by sophomore guard G.G. Gunther (San Francisco, Calif. / Lowell).
 
Regan Fruh (Helena, Mont./ Helena) had a standout performance, leading Macalester with 17 points and eight rebounds. Lauren Clamage (Lake Forest, Ill. / Lake Forest Academy) added eight points for the Scots after knocking down two shots from beyond the arc.
 
The Tommies made their biggest impact on the boards, outrebounding Macalester 49-27 in the contest. St. Thomas was led in scoring by Lucia Renikoff, who finished with 14 points and seven rebounds.
 
Macalester will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 30 when they travel to St. Peter, Minn. to take on Gustavus Adolphus College. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. following the men's game.
