ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College women's basketball team connected on 22 of 25 second-half free throw attempts to secure a 79-73 non-conference victory over Northland College. The Scots are 7-8 overall and 2-6 in the MIAC following the win, while the Lumberjills fall to 7-7 overall.
Macalester jumped out to an early lead and held it for the entirety of the contest. The Scots entered the half up by 16 (38-22) after shooting 40% from the field. Northland jumpstarted their offense in the second half, scoring 33 points in the fourth quarter alone on 63% shooting from the field. Macalester held onto the lead, connecting on several key free throw attempts down the stretch. Senior guard
Erin Murray (Sparta, Wis. / Sparta) shot a perfect 14 of 14 from the line and finished with 16 points and three assists.
Four Macalester players scored in double-figures in the match-up. Sophomore center
Regan Fruh (Helena, Mont. / Helena) and sophomore guard
Vivi Gregorich (Boulder, Colo. / Boulder) led the way with 18 points for the Scots. Fruh connected on six of nine shots from the field, added six free throws and pulled down a team-best seven rebounds. Gregorich shot six of 11 from the field and knocked down two shots from beyond the arc.
Lauren Clamage (Lake Forest, Ill. / Lake Forest Academy) finished with 17 points, 14 of those coming in the first half.
Tonight's victory marked Macalester's final non-conference opponent of the season. Northland was led by Nicole Huber with 15 points and seven rebounds.
The Scots will return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 20 when they host Augsburg College in Wednesday evening MIAC play. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Leonard Center. Augsburg enters the contest with an 8-7 overall record and a 3-5 mark in conference play.
