ROSEVILLE, Minn. – Two goals just 12 seconds apart in the first half sparked the Macalester College men's soccer team to its first victory of the season, 3-0 over the University of Northwestern Tuesday night at Reynolds Field. The Scots, who opened the season with three consecutive ties, improve to 1-0-3, while the Eagles drop to 0-3.
In the 15th minute, junior forward
Charlie Spurr (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) put Macalester on top with a goal off of an assist from sophomore midfielder
Jake Burke (Dublin, Ireland/Shattuck-St. Mary's). Shortly after the ensuing kickoff the Scots earned a corner kick, with Burke eventually scoring 12 seconds after Spurr's tally for a 2-0 lead.
Macalester continued to dominate play, and 13 minutes into the second half sophomore midfielder
Tristan Springer (Edmonds, Wash./Meadowdale) scored to put the Scots ahead, 3-0. Junior defender
Robert Tomecek (Lisle, Ill./Benet Academy) assisted on Springer's goal for his team-leading fourth assist of the season.
Junior goalkeeper
Zeke Vainer (Melrose, Mass./Melrose) was required to make just one save, as Macalester limited Northwestern to three total shots while taking 25. Turner Main made 11 saves for the Eagles.
Next up for the Scots is a non-conference match at St. Scholastica on Friday, Sept. 11. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. in Duluth, Minn.
