DULUTH, Minn. – The Macalester College men's soccer team blanked its second straight opponent in defeating St. Scholastica, 2-0 in a non-conference game Friday afternoon at Saints Field. The Scots, who shut out Northwestern, 3-0 on Tuesday, improve to 2-0-3 on the season. The Saints dropped their first game of 2015 and fall to 3-1.
Less than 10 minutes after the opening kick-off, senior midfielder
Dylan Wong (Clarksburg, Calif./Jesuit) set up junior forward
Austin Burrows (Roseville, Calif./Jesuit) to give Macalester a 1-0 lead. It remained a one-goal game until the 79th minute, when a foul was called on a St. Scholastica player in the Saints' penalty area. Junior forward
Charlie Spurr (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) took the ensuing penalty kick and beat Saints' goalkeeper Sandy Davidson-Hunt to make the score 2-0 Mac.
"That's a great win over a very talented opponent," head coach
Gregg Olson said. "We had to make a few adjustments to how we play and it immediately paid off. Our first goal forced CSS to have to push and it exposed them and aided in our shape and game."
Junior goalkeeper
Zeke Vainer (Melrose, Mass./Melrose) earned his second shutout of the year with five saves, as St. Scholastica held a slight 14-12 edge in shots. Davidson-Hunt finished with four saves for the Saints, who have won the past three UMAC championships.
"That performance by each of our young men against a top level opponent sets the stage to open conference with confidence at home on Wednesday."
The Scots host Gustavus Adolphus on Wednesday, Sept. 16 in the first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match of the season. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Macalester Stadium.
