ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's soccer team remained unbeaten but is still looking for its first win of the season after tying Dubuque, 1-1 in double-overtime Saturday night at Macalester Stadium. The Scots are now 0-0-3 on the year, while the Spartans are now 2-0-1.
After a scoreless first half, Macalester got on the scoreboard in the 69th minute. A long free kick from junior goalkeeper
Zeke Vainer (Melrose, Mass./Melrose) was deflected by junior midfielder
Alan Schembri-Wismayer (Rochester, Minn./Lourdes) to first-year midfielder
Clayton Smith (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) near the back post. Smith headed the ball past Dubuque goalkeeper Jose Resendiz to put the Scots on top, 1-0.
The lead lasted until late in the second half, when a foul was called on Macalester in its own penalty area. Gonzalo Hernandez scored on the ensuing penalty kick in the 85th minute to tie the score at 1-1. With time winding down, junior defender
Robert Tomecek (Lisle, Ill./Benet Academy) hit a long shot from the right side that caromed off the crossbar, keeping the game knotted through 90 minutes.
Macalester's best scoring chances in overtime came off corner kicks, as junior forwards
Charlie Spurr (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) and
Austin Burrows (Roseville, Calif./Jesuit) both had open headers that were saved by goalkeeper Riley Jenson.
Junior goalkeeper
Zeke Vainer (Melrose, Mass./Melrose) tallied three saves in goal for the Scots. Jenson played the first half and both overtimes for Dubuque, making three saves.
The Scots return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 8 with a non-conference game at Northwestern University. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Roseville, Minn.
