ST. PAUL, Minn. – In its first home game of the season, the Macalester College men's soccer team drew with visiting Wisconsin-Platteville, 1-1 in double-overtime Friday night at Macalester Stadium. The result is the second straight tie for the Scots (0-0-2), who began the 2015 season with a 3-3 stalemate at No. 17 Wartburg on Tuesday. The Pioneers are now 1-0-1.
After a scoreless first half, UW-Plattesville struck first when Logan Rinderknecht scored from 15 yards out in the 68th minute for a 1-0 lead. In the 73rd minute, Macalester drew a free kick near the right sideline. Junior
Robert Tomecek (Lisle, Ill./Benet Academy) lined the free kick into the penalty area, where first-year midfielder
Clayton Smith (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) deflected the ball to the far post. Sophomore midfielder
Tristan Springer (Edmonds, Wash./Meadowdale) collected the ball and scored his second goal of the season to tie the score at 1-1.
The Scots threatened in overtime with two solid chances. In the 106th minute, junior forward
Austin Burrows (Roseville, Calif./Jesuit) headed a Tomecek corner kick just wide of the goal. Two minutes later, a shot by senior midfielder
Dylan Wong (Clarksburg, Calif./Jesuit) was saved by Pioneer goalkeeper Scott Sibik.
Sibik made three saves, as the Scots out-shot UW-Plattesville 18-6 for the game. Junior
Zeke Vainer (Melrose, Mass./Melrose), who registered a career-high 10 saves at Wartburg, tallied two saves for Macalester.
The Scots host Dubuque in a non-conference match on Saturday, Sept. 5, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Macalester Stadium.
