ST. PAUL, Minn. – Three first-half goals sparked the Macalester College men's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Minnesota-Morris in a non-conference game Wednesday night at Macalester Stadium. The Scots, who are ranked fourth in the latest NSCAA North Region rankings, have won four in a row to improve to 4-0-3 on the year. The Cougars fall to 2-7.
Macalester opened the scoring in the sixth minute, when junior midfielder
Alan Schembri-Wismayer (Rochester, Minn./Lourdes) attacked down the right and played the ball across the face of the goal. Senior midfielder
Dylan Wong (Clarksburg, Calif./Jesuit) one-timed the ball into the goal for a 1-0 lead. Then in the 19th minute, Schembri-Wismayer blasted a free kick from just outside the left corner of the penalty area into the top left corner of the goal for a two-goal lead. Freshman defender
Logan Harper (Westwood, Mass./St. Mark's School) followed Schembri-Wismayer's lead, scoring off a free kick from just outside the right corner of the penalty area in the 28th minute.
The Scots carried play for the majority of the game, limiting the Cougars to just four shots. Junior goalkeeper
Zeke Vainer (Melrose, Mass./Melrose) made two saves as Macalester earned its third shutout in its past four games.
"It was fun to see so many guys contribute to the win tonight," head coach
Gregg Olson said. "It's another shutout for Zeke, and we scored three really nice goals in the first half."
The Scots return to MIAC play with a league game at Hamline on Saturday, Sept. 26, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
