ST. PAUL, Minn. – A goal near the end of regulation allowed the Macalester College men's soccer team to tie at Hamline, 1-1 in double overtime Saturday afternoon at Paterson Field. The draw in the MIAC contest keeps the Scots unbeaten overall at 4-0-4 and in the conference at 1-0-1, while the Pipers are now 2-4-2, 1-0-1 MIAC.
A minute and 21 seconds after halftime, Hamline's Jake Nieman scored the game's first goal off an assist from James Reardon to put the Pipers up, 1-0. Macalester battled for the equalizer and saw its efforts rewarded in the 87th minute. Junior forward
Austin Burrows (Roseville, Calif./Jesuit) tallied his fourth goal of the season to tie the score at 1-1. Neither team found the net in the two overtime periods and the game ended in a tie.
Junior goalkeeper
Zeke Vainer (Melrose, Mass./Melrose) registered five saves on the day, while Dean Isaacson notched six saves, including two in the extra sessions, for the Pipers. The Scots held a 14-10 edge in shots for the game.
"Hamline really showed up, they had a good game plan and they executed it really well," head coach
Gregg Olson said. "We need more guys to play well if we want to win games in the MIAC. We've asked the players to make some adjustments and the staff will do the same to prepare moving forward."
Macalester hosts Luther College on Tuesday, Sept. 29 in a non-conference game. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Macalester Stadium.
