ST. PAUL, Minn. --Â Gustavus Adolphus used a 15-3 run to turn a tie game into a 12-point halftime lead and a 14-point advantage in the paint enabled the Gusties to hold off Macalester, 70-61, in the Scots home finale for 2014-15.
Trailing by as many as 18 points in the second half, the last time with four minutes, 43 seconds to play in the game, Macalester used a 15-2 run to close to within five points of the lead with 52 second remaining in the game but the Gusties made nine of their 10 free throws attempts after that, including six from Chad Poppen, to seal the win.
Macalester's final surge was fueled by eight points from
Dylan Kilgour and back-to-back three-point plays by Kilgour and
Max Horvath, the latter's free throw cutting the lead to 61-56 with 52 seconds to play.
GAC took it's 14-point halftime lead thanks to a 58.3 percent shooting performance from the field in the opening 20 minutes along with a 17-9 rebounding advantage.
Kilgour, after a quite five points in the first half, exploded for 17 points in 19 minutes in the second and led all scores with 22 points for the game. He hit on seven of 12 field goal attempts, including a 4-for-7 effort from beyond the three-point arc, but it wasn't enough to offset a balanced effort from the Gusties, who got at least eight points from five different players and had a 33-12 advantage in bench scoring.
The Scots wrap up the season, Saturday, when they play their final road game of the season at Saint Mary's. Opening tip in Winona, Minn., is slated for 3 p.m.
