WINONA, Minn. – The Macalester College men's basketball team dropped a MIAC game at Saint Mary's University, 85-70 Saturday afternoon at Saint Mary's Gym. With the loss, the Scots fall to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in league play, while the Cardinals are now 3-2, 1-1 MIAC.
With the game tied at 23-23 with less than seven minutes to play in the first half, Saint Mary's closed out the period with a 13-4 run to take a 36-27 advantage at the break. The Cardinals shot 53.7 percent from the field in the first half, while senior guard
Kyle Bernhard (Sleepy Hollow, Ill./Dundee-Crown had eight points for the Scots.
In the second half, Saint Mary's pushed its lead to as many as 20 points following a three by Braden Walbeck that made the score 69-49 at the six-minute mark. Macalester made a late charge, cutting the deficit to nine with a 12-1 run sparked by two three-pointers by first year forward
Wyatt Ferm (Farmington, Minn./Farmington). But that's as close as the Scots would get, as the Cardinals hit their free throws down the stretch to wrap up the win.
Macalester had five players score in double figures, led by Ferm with 16 points off the bench. Junior center
Kareem Ismail (Pasadena, Calif./Flintridge Prep) tallied 15 points, six rebounds and two blocks, first year guard
Michael Gutierrez (Stillwater, Minn./St. Croix Prep Academy) had 12 points and a team-best seven boards and junior guard
Jordan Black-Matthews (Dallas, Tex./Covenant Christian) added 11 points. Bernhard finished with 11 points. Connor Kaiser led all players with 20 points, while Quashingm Smith-Pugh added 19 points for Saint Mary's.
Macalester plays another MIAC road game on Wednesday, Dec. 9 at St. Thomas. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn.
