ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's basketball team fell to the University of St. Thomas on the road, 78-53 in a MIAC game Wednesday evening at Schoenecker Arena. The Scots are now 2-6 overall and 0-3 in the conference, while the Tommies improve to 5-1, 2-1 MIAC.
St. Thomas took control of the game midway through the first half with an 11-4 run that put the hosts ahead, 25-14. The Tommies closed out the period with seven straight points to take a 36-21 lead at the half. Macalester was outrebounded 24-13 in the half and shot just 30.8 percent from the floor.
The lead grew to as many as 34 points until the Scots registered a 14-5 run over the final 5:28 of the game. First year forward
Wyatt Ferm (Farmington, Minn./Farmington) led the way for Macalester with 16 points on 7-of-14 shooting to go with eight rebounds, two assists and two steals. Junior center
Kareem Ismail (Pasadena, Calif./Flintridge Prep) added nine points and five boards, while senior guard
Kyle Bernhard (Sleepy Hollow, Ill./Dundee-Crown) had eight points. Jacob Hanson paced St. Thomas with 12 points off the bench. Grant Shaeffer pitched in nine points, six rebounds and six assists.
Macalester closes out 2015 with a home game against MIAC foe Gustavus Adolphus on Friday, Dec. 11. The league match-up starts at 7:45 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
