ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College women's basketball team took on No. 21 ranked Luther College in the Scots' 2015-16 home opener. Macalester fell to the sharp-shooting Norse but put together a strong second half, outscoring Luther by eight for a 73-58 final.
Macalester moves to 1-1 overall this season. Luther improves to 2-0 with the win.
The Norse shot lights out in the first half, connecting on seven shots from beyond the arc and over 53% from the field. Their full-court pressure forced the Scots into 13 first-half turnovers to take a 23-point advantage after the first 20 minutes of play.
Macalester turned things around after the half, cutting the lead to 17 in the third quarter and holding Luther to just four points in the fourth to end the game with a 15-point deficit. The Scots capitalized on strong inside play by sophomore
Regan Fruh (Helena, Mont. / Helena) and junior
Park Masterson (Poway, Calif./ Poway). Fruh led the way offensively with 18 points, shooting six of 11 from the field. Masterson added 11 points on the night. The duo each pulled down 10 rebounds.
Senior guard
Erin Murray (Sparta, Wis./ Sparta) added nine points after connecting on seven of eight shots from the line and dished out four assists.
Leah Gray (San Rafael, Calif. / Branson School) also added nine points.
Luther was led by Tayler Jenks who shot six of nine to finish with 16 points.
Macalester will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 21 as they host Grinnell College at the Leonard Center. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
