Men’s Soccer: Macalester Defeats St. Olaf, 2-1 in MIAC Clash

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's soccer team earned a key MIAC victory with a 2-1 win over first-place St. Olaf Saturday afternoon at Macalester Stadium. The result gives the Scots a 6-0-4 record on the season, including a 2-0-1 mark in league play. The Oles suffer their first conference loss of the season and fall to 5-5 overall and 4-1 in the MIAC.

Junior midfielder Alan Schembri-Wismayer (Rochester, Minn./Lourdes) put Macalester on the scoreboard with a blast from the left that beat St. Olaf goalkeeper Ben Braman in the eighth minute. In the second half, first year defender Logan Harper (Westwood, Mass./St. Mark's School) scored from 12 yards out to make it a 2-0 lead with 33 minutes remaining. The goal proved to be the difference, as Brenden Johnson found the net off a corner kick on a blistering shot from 30 yards out to cut the lead to 2-1 in the 62nd minute.

The Scots controlled play the rest of the way, allowing two shots that were not on frame to close out the victory. Junior goalkeeper Zeke Vainer (Melrose, Mass./Melrose) registered two saves for Macalester, which remained unbeaten on the season. The Oles held a slight 7-6 advantage in shots for the game.

"Any win in the MIAC is a great win when you compete in one of the top conferences in the nation," head coach Gregg Olson said. "St. Olaf is a possession style team with loads of talent. To beat a team like that and take three points is huge for our program. All three goals in today's game were taken with such class that it makes you proud of the quality and strength of the MIAC."

Macalester hosts Gustavus Adolphus in another MIAC contest on Tuesday, Oct. 6, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Macalester Stadium.
