Men’s Soccer: Macalester Draws with Gustavus, 1-1

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's soccer team played Gustavus Adolphus to a 1-1 double-overtime tie in a MIAC match Tuesday night at Macalester Stadium. The draw keeps the Scots undefeated overall (6-0-5) and in league play (2-0-2), while the Gusties are now 5-3-2, 0-3-2 MIAC.

Ten minutes before halftime, Gustavus got on the scoreboard when a long throw-in from Patrick Leach was tipped by Macalester junior goalkeeper Zeke Vainer (Melrose, Mass./Melrose) before falling into the goal for a 1-0 Gusties' lead. The score remained tied until the 77th minute. Sophomore forward Danny Baumann (Waterford, Wis./Muskego) collected the ball to the right of the goal near the endline and sent a pass in front of the goal to junior midfielder Alan Schembri-Wismayer (Rochester, Minn./Lourdes). Schembri-Wismayer blasted a shot with his first touch into the back of the net to tie the score at 1-1.

With time winding down in the second overtime period, first year midfielder Clayton Smith (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) nearly ended the game with a header that went just wide. The scoring chance was one of four shots taken by Macalester in the final overtime period.

Vainer ended up with two saves, while Gustavus goalkeeper Matt Bateman registered three saves, as the Scots held a 12-8 advantage in shots.

"Some games are ugly and tonight was one of those," head coach Gregg Olson said. "It seemed like a tennis match at times with how direct it was. There was loads of intensity in the game and too many fouls off the ball. Gustavus came out pressing and looking to get direct. To their credit, they did both well and created chances with their set pieces. And, fortune was with them as they had a throw-in go directly into the goal.

"Our 2nd half and overtime was tremendous. The team responded with a wonderful performance filled with quality and chances. The goal we took in the 77th minute was sweet. From the start of the play to Alan Schembri Wismayer's strike, what a goal. Alan has been one of the best players over the past few weeks and he certainly was tonight. The chances we created after the goal, we obviously need to have more quality to the final touch.  But, we created enough to win the game.

"At the end of the night, it is not a loss. The result is not a step forward, but at least we didn't give away three points."

Macalester continues MIAC play with a game at St. Thomas on Saturday, Oct. 10. The game starts at 1:00 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn.
