ST. PAUL, Minn. – Junior forward
Alan Schembri-Wismayer (Rochester, Minn./Lourdes) scored the game's only goal in the 69th minute as the Macalester College men's soccer team defeated UW-Superior, 1-0 Tuesday evening at Macalester Stadium. The win keeps the Scots unbeaten at 10-0-5, while the Yellowjackets of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference drops to 12-5.
In a match-up of two regionally-ranked teams, the fourth-ranked Scots and ninth-ranked Yellowjackets played to a scoreless stalemate through most of regulation. Then in the 69th minute, sophomore forward
Danny Baumann (Waterford, Wis./Muskego) collected the ball near the top of the penalty area and found Schembri-Wismayer to his left. Schembri-Wismayer blasted a shot from 15 yards out inside the right goalpost to break the tie and put Macalester on top. It was his fourth goal and first game winner of the season, while Baumann collected a point for the fifth consecutive game.
UW-Superior's best chance to score down the stretch came in the final minute, when Jon Bucklew sent a hard shot just over the crossbar. The Scots held a slight 11-9 advantage in shots, with junior goalkeeper
Zeke Vainer (Melrose, Mass./Melrose) making two saves for his third straight shutout. Ben Wilhelm had three saves in goal for the Yellowjackets.
Macalester returns to MIAC play with a game against Augsburg on Saturday, Oct. 24. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m. at Macalester Stadium. The Scots will honor their five seniors before the game.
