Men’s Soccer: Macalester Stays Hot, Beats St. Mary’s, 3-0

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's soccer team picked up another MIAC victory with a 3-0 win over Saint Mary's Wednesday night at Macalester Stadium. The Scots improve to 8-0-5 overall and 4-0-2 in league play to move into sole possession of second place with 14 points. The Cardinals drop to 4-7-2, 0-5-2 MIAC.

In the 25th minute, junior midfielder Alan Schembri-Wismayer (Rochester, Minn./Lourdes) dribbled around a defender on the end line to the right of the goal and played the ball to junior forward Charlie Spurr (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt). Spurr left no doubts, burying a shot into the goal for a 1-0 lead and his team-leading seventh tally of the season. Sophomore forward Danny Baumann (Waterford, Wis./Muskego) scored on virtually the same type of play in the 45th minute, with sophomore midfielder Max Abramson (Del Mar, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy) supplying the pass off the end line. It was Baumann's third goal in as many games.

Just over three minutes into the second half, junior forward Austin Burrows (Roseville, Calif./Jesuit) knocked home a long cross from senior midfielder Dylan Wong (Clarksburg, Calif./Jesuit) for a 3-0 lead. Macalester limited Saint Mary's to five shots for the game, with junior goalkeeper Zeke Vainer (Melrose, Mass./Melrose) making one save to record the shutout.

The Scots took 12 shots with six on goal, as goalkeepers Nate Levy and Evan Claffy combined to make three saves for the Cardinals.

Macalester continues MIAC play with a game at Carleton on Saturday, Oct. 17. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. in Northfield, Minn.
