ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Macalester raced out to an early lead but 16 turnovers led to 26 Concordia points and enabled the Cobbers to escape the Leonard Center with a 58-50 victory.
Bert Yaffe and
Kareem Ismail combined to score Macalester's first nine points as the Scots raced out to a 9-4 lead just over four minutes into the game but Concordia answered with a 9-0 run to take a 13-9 lead, which it would extend to seven points.
An eight-point run by the hosts late in the opening half gave them a 24-23 lead but Brandon Giese ended the run with a three-point basket go give the Cobbers a two-point lead heading into the half and they would not relinquish the lead, expanding it to 12 on two occassions in the second half.
Turnovers and offensive rebounds proved to be the difference for the Cobbers. Not only did they have a 26-7 advantage in points off turnovers, they used 13 offensive rebounds to gain a 13-2 advantage in second-chance points.
Macalester outshot Concordia, hitting 42.9 percent of its field goal attempts and 57.1 percent of its three-point attempts while the Cobbers shot 38.5 and 26.7 percent, respectively.
Leading the way for the Scots was Yaffe, who hit eight of 13 shots from the field, including all three three-point attempts, to give him a career-best 19 points. Ismail added 18 points to raise his team-leading scoring average to 14.4 points per game.
Kyle Bernhard, making his second consecutive start, tied his career high with seven rebounds for the second game in a row.
Next up for Macalester is a short drive down Summit Avenue, Wednesday, for a 7 p.m. meeting with St. Thomas at the Tommies' Schoenecker Arena.
