MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Concordia outscored Macalester by 14 points in the paint and only turned the ball over twice to gain an eight-point advantage as the Cobbers defeated the Scots, 63-52.
Macalester turned the ball over 13 times and did not score off either of Concordia's turnovers while a 32-18 advantage in points in the paint proved to be the difference in the Cobbers' 11-point win.
The Scots led early in the game on baskets by
Kareem Ismail and
Dylan Kilgour but a pair of baskets by Brandon Giese, including a three-point basket, gave the Cobbers a 5-4 lead and they would not trail during the game's final 37 minutes, 17 seconds.
A three-point play by Ismail with 15:22 to play in the first half would tie the game for a final time but Scott Flatterud scored Concordia's next five points to take a 15-10 lead which the Cobbers would not relinquish.
Ismail had game highs with 20 points and eight rebounds while Kilgour had 13 points and five rebounds but Concordia's balance was more effective as four players finished in double figures and all five starters scored at least eight points.
Macalester shot 47.5 percent from the field, including 58.8 percent in the second half, However, the Scots turned the ball over seven times in the second while the Cobbers had none, and the hosts grabbed eight offensive rebounds, allowing them to take seven more shots and go to the free throw line six more times to keep their guests at bay over the game's final 20 minutes.
Macalester reutrns home, Wednesday, to begin a three-game homestand. The Scots open that homestand by hosting Augsburg, Feb. 4, beginning at 7 p.m.
