NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- Macalester didn't commit an extraordinary amount of turnovers, 14 to St. Olaf's nine, but the Oles converted that into an 18-point scoring advantage in a 74-52 victory at Skoglund Center.
St. Olaf's 25-7 advantage in points off turnovers accounted for 18 of 22-point winning margin for the 24th-ranked Oles.
The game started well for the Scots as a
Dylan Kilgour jumpred and three-point basket by
Kyle Bernhard gave them a 5-0 lead in the game's opening 90 seconds. St. Olaf, however, responded with a 15-2 run over the next 4:32 to take their biggest lead of the first half, eight points at 15-7.
Macalester fought back, using a 10-1 run, eventually taking a 17-16 lead when Bernhard scored with 6:37 to play in the opening half.
It was the Oles' 12-2 run to start the second half which was the beginning of the end for the Scots. St. Olaf turned a 26-24 lead into a 38-26 lead in the opening 2:02 of the second half.
A three-pointed by Kilgour slowed the Oles down but, after a Riley Aeikens basket made the score 40-29 with 16:05 to play, the lead was never cut to single digits.
St. Olaf's big advantage in the second half came in the form of a 73.9 percent shooting effort from the field as the Oles hit on 17 of 23 attempts, including six of seven from three-point range. Justin Pahl hit six of eight field-goal attempts, including four of five three pointers, to score 17 points in 15 minutes during the second half, finishing with a game-high 26 points while playing 28 minutes.
The Oles were also whistled for just five fouls in the entire game, sending Macalester to the foul line just twice.
Kilgour's 12 points led Macalester while
Kareem Ismail chipped in with 10 points and a game-high six rebounds.
Up next for the Scots is another road game as they travel west on I-94 to Moorhead, Minn., Saturday, where they will face Concordia in a 3 p.m. game.
