ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Kyle Bernhard made a 24-foot three-point basket to give Macalester a 50-49 lead, a 26-footer to extend the lead to four points and Karrem Ismail made four free throws in the game's final 27 seconds as the Scots handed Carleton a 57-49 overtime defeat.
Eight of Bernhard's 16 points came in overtime as his first basket tied the game at 47-47, after Shane McSparron scored the first basket of overtime. Bernhard then followed with his two long-range three-pointers to give Macalester a four-point lead.
Unable to make a basket to close the gap, Carleton was forced to foul in an attempt to get the ball back but Ismail made that strategy backfire as he hit all four of his freethrow attempts down the stretch.
The visitors led for nearly 18 minutes of the first half but the Scots took a 23-21 lead into halftime when
Dylan Kilgour hit a three-pointer from the right wing.
Two of Dylan Kilgour's three three-point baskets
gave Macalester a lead.McSparron hit the first two baskets of the second half and Kevin Grow's jumper from the lane gave the Scots a four-point lead. Kilgour then hit a three-pointer to break the Knights' six-point run and sank another basket from beyond the arc to give his team a 31-29 lead, one which they held until Kevin Grow's basket with 53 seconds remaining in regulation gave his team a 45-44 lead.
Grow had a chance to make it a two-point lead when he went to the foul line but couldn't complete the three-point play. Ismail, Macalester's leading scorer on the season, had gone scoreless in the game until he went to the foul line in the waning moments of regulation. However, he was only able to hit one of two free throws and the game went to overtime.
Bernhard's 16 points came on 6-of-11 shooting, including 4-of-7 from three-point range. Kilgour scored 14 points and made five of his nine shots from the field, going 3-for-4 on his three-point attempts.
Bert Yaffe added 12 points on 5-for-7 shooting, hitting both of his three points attempts.
The win gives Macalester a 5-11 overall record, the first time they've won five games since going 6-19 in 2007-08. The Scots return to action, Wednesday, when they travel to Northfield, Minn., for a 7:45 p.m. game at St. Olaf.
