ST. PETER, Minn. --Â Gustavus Adolphus shot better than 30 percentage points higher than Macalester from the field in the second half as the Gusties broke open a one-point halftime score and cruised to a 61-43 win.
The Scots held the lead for seven minutes, two seconds, at one point in the first half, opening their largest lead of six points, at 17-11, when Kyle Berhard hit a jump shot with 8:20 to play in the half.
After the Gusties came back to take a 28-27 lead into halftime, Bernhard hit two free throws to open the second half and give Macalester a one-point lead.
The score changed hands four times in the first 1:42 of the second when Sergio Najera's short jumper from the lane gave GAC a 32-31 lead, which it would not relinquish. From there, the Gusties would outscore their guests, 31-10, as they would open a 23-point lead before the Scots scored the game's final five points.
The hosts held a 34-13 rebounding advantage for the game, including 20-7 in the first half, which allowed them to stay in the game in the early going as they outscored Macalester, 9-0, in second-chance points.
In the second half, the Gusties shots 14-for-22 (63.6 percent) from the field compared to the Scots' 6-for-18 (33.3 percent) performance. For the games GAC shot 51.1 percent from the floor compared to 40.0 percent for Macalester.
The Scots were led in scoring and rebounding by
Kareem Ismail, who scord 16 points and grabbed five rebounds. Kyle Berhard added 12 points.
