Box Score ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Macalester played even with ninth-ranked St. Thomas throughout the match but Connor Young's first goal of the season, in the 32nd minute, enabled the Tommies to claim a 1-0 victory on their home pitch in both teams' Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener.
"The result was true, UST was the better team in the first half," Macalester coach
Gregg Olson said. "They deserved the goal they got, but we pushed hard in the second half and put some pressure on them.
"We had our chances. We had a goal called back on a close offside. It's just hard for us to open with that road game. They're a great team."
St. Thomas had an 8-5 edge in shots in the game but both teams had just two shots on the goal for game. The Scots had an edge in corner kicks, 3-2, and were whistled for four offside while St. Thomas was whistled twice.
The Scots return to action, Saturday, when they host their first MIAC game of the season, facing Hamline at Macalester Stadium beginning at 1 p.m.
