Men's Soccer: Macalester falters in double overtime

Scots go to second overtime for second consecutive day.

Box Score

DECORAH, Iowa -- After a scoreless, double-overtime tie, Saturday, Macalester went into a second overtime for the second consecutive day but dropped a 3-2 decision at 22nd-ranked Luther with 23 seconds to play in the game.

"We played really well today," Scots head coach Gregg Olson said. "I feel bummed for the guys as they played their hearts out against a top team in the country on the road."

Danny Baumann scored his first collegiate goal in the games 34th minute to give Macalester a 1-0 lead at halftime but the Norse's J.W. Slauson scored twice in less than five minutes early in the second half to give his team a 2-1 lead.

Nick Sorenson then tied the game with under eight minutes remaining in regulation with his first goal of the season and the game went down to its final minute, when Slauson set up Jon Gednalske for the game-winning goal.

Although they played nearly 240 minutes in two days without picking up a win, Olson saw positives from his team's play on the weekend.

"We played a few young players more minutes than they have seen yet because we head into conference play, Wednesday," he said. "They showed well and proved that we have solid depth in the program."

Conference play begins Wednesday, Sept. 17, for Macalester when they travel west on Grand Avenue to face St. Thomas at South Field. The match is slated for a 4 p.m. start.
