Macalester Volleyball: Scots fall to UW-Stout and Martin Luther in season openers

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Macalester College volleyball team opened up the 2014 season at the St. Olaf Invitational. The Scots fell to the University of Wisconsin-Stout in three straight sets with scores coming in at 25-18, 25-18, and 25-23. Macalester took on Martin Luther College in their second match of the day, falling in a hard fought four-set battle.

Macalester holds a 0-2 overall record this season after their first day of action. The Scots resume play at the St. Olaf Invitational on Saturday, Aug. 30 at 10 a.m. against Bethany Lutheran and again at 12 p.m. as they take on Crown College.

Recap vs. University of Wisconsin-Stout:

The Scots' offensive attack was led by sophomore outside hitter Brooke Hunter who posted a team-high seven kills in 27 total attempts. Outside hitter Clara Bauman posted six kills in her freshman debut.

Junior Cora Trout finished with 23 digs for the Scots. Macalester recorded four total team blocks to Wisconsin-Stout's 1, but it wasn't enough to stop the Blue Devils who hit an additional .107 higher percentage in the match.

Recap vs. Martin Luther:

Macalester took on Martin Luther College in their second outing of the St. Olaf Invitational. The Scots fell to MLC in four sets, with nine tied scores and three lead changes occurring in the fourth and decisive set. Martin Luther took the match with scores of 25-16, 25-21, 12-25 and 26-24.

Clara Bauman led the way for Mac, posting 14 kills and a .257 hitting percentage. Brooke Hunter contributed a well-rounded performance adding seven kills, four service aces and seven digs.

Sophomore setter Samantha Bongiorno finished with 21 assists in the match.
