HOW IT HAPPENED•
Danny Baumann scored, with 15 minutes, 40 seconds to play in the second half, for the third consecutive game when
Austin Burrows played a ball through the Bethel defense. Baumann won the race for the ball and, from eight yards out, scored his fourth goal of the season. However, he was injured on the play and did not return to the game.
• Just 69 seconds after Baumann's goal, the Royals got a free free kick from 25 yards out on the left side. Ryan Nichols' kick found the right foot of Stephen Gronseth, who was moving from right to left across the top of the 18-yard box. He managed to redirect the ball across him body while on the move to even the score.
• With time running out,
Cole Erickson crossed the ball to the top of the crease from the right corner.
Alan Schembri-Wismayer deflected the ball to Wong, who settled the ball and beat Bethel goalkeeper Jakob Bartels for the game winner.
NOTES• Macalester's 29 shot attempts were the most since they recorded 30 hosts, Sept. 5, 2014, versus Coe..
•
Robert Tomecek and
Colby King both played the entire game.
• Baumann's four goals this season are the most by a Scot rookie since
Chris Kartheiser scored four during his first year in 2010.
QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH GREGG OLSON• On his team's 29-11 advantage in shots: "We have a way of making games dramatic. With 29 shots, you would hope that we would put a game away but, with a young team, that's not always the case."
• On Bethel's game-tying goal: "Credit to Gronseth for his goal. It was well taken and put us on our heals for a while and even into overtime."
• Discussing Wong's game-winning goal: "Dylan has worked really hard and was long overdue for a big for a big goal. He took it with real class in the dying moments of the second overtime."
• Speaking on the players who don't get a lot of notice: "The players who have been the backbone of this team deserve a lot of credit. They are the players who do the dirty work.
Tristan Springer and
Jake Burke were fantastic on both sides of the ball. Tristan seemed to win everything in the air and Jake connected the game for us."
• Talking about the MIAC playoff chase: "We needed the three points to remain in the playoff hunt. The MIAC is wide open now and we hope to make a big statement next Saturday versus first-place St. Olaf."
UP NEXT• Up next on the Scots agenda is St. Olaf. The two teams will square off next Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m., in St. Olaf.
