ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Macalester scored on its first five possessions and needed to go just 63 yards to score its first 21 points in a 34-0 win over Knox.
A blocked punt, a bad snap on a punt attempt and an interception gave the Scots the ball in Prairie Fire territory on three consecutive possessions to open the game and the hosts took advantage of each.
Knox fumbled the opening kickoff into its own end zone but, because it had not gained possession of the ball, took over on its own 20-yard line. The Prairie Fire was then held to just seven yards on three plays and
Bradley Cox came on to block Drake Sykes' punt, giving Macalester the ball at the Knox 17.
From there,
Zandy Stowell carried for seven yards and followed up with a 10-yard scoring run to put the Scots on top, 7-0, just two minutes, 57 seconds into the game.
Knox was only able to gain five yards on three plays on its next possession and a bad snap resulted in a 19-yard loss, giving Macalester the ball just 14 yards from the end zone.
A holding penalty would push the ball back to Knox 24 but, after a five-yard rush and an incomplete pass, Bialostock tossed a screen pass to Stowell, who bounced his way to pay dirt and a 14-0 Scot lead with 8:29 to play in the opening quarter.
The Prairie Fire garned a first down on its third possession but
Fabian Arrizon intercepted a pass to set up Macalester at the Knox 32 and, seven plays later, Bialostock snuck the ball in from the one-yard line.
The Scots then scored on their two possessions of the second quarter, with Bialstock finishing a nine-play, 54-yard drive with a seven-yard run before polishing off a 14-play, 80-yard drive with another one-yard run with 6:25 to play in the first half.
The teams then battled through a scoreless second half as Maclester garned its third win in four games.
The Scots outgained the Prairie Fire, 330-167, gained 269 yards in the first half. Bialostock completed 10 of 16 passes for 116 yards while adding another 51 yards rushing on 11 attempts. Stowell gained 84 yards rushing on 17 carries.
A total of 25 players recorded tackles for Macalester, with
Ed LaFoy leading the way with seven while Konnor and
Ryan Fleming each had six.
The Scots open North Division play in the Midwest Conference next Saturday when they travel to Ripon College for a 1 p.m. game.
