Macalester Football: Scots come from behind to down Beloit

Eighteen-point third quarter wipes out 11-point halftime deficit.

BELOIT, Wis. -- Zandy Stowell's 40-yard run with one minute, 44 seconds to play in the third quarter put the finishing touches on an 18-point third quarter which enabled Macalester to overcome an 11-point halftime deficit in a 28-21 win over Beloit.

In the midst of a series of outstanding performance, Stowell had a career-high 219 yards rushing on 29 carries, averaging 7.6 yards per attempt, and he pounded the Beloit defense into submission.

He carried the ball six times for 46 yards in the opening quarter, nine times for 32 yards in the second quarter, seven times for 84 yards in a pivotal 18-point third quarter for the Scots, and seven times for 57 yards in the final quarter as Macalester held the ball for 11 minutes, 34 seconds in the fourth quarter.

After the Buccaneers went 87 yards in 13 plays to take a 7-0 lead 8:08 into opening quarter, the Scots went 75 yards in just five plays to tie the score. Stowell carried twice for 19 yards on the drive while Samson Bialostok connected on all three of his pass attempts, for 61 yards, hooking up with Victor Bordo for a 26-yard score with 4:53 to play in the first quarter.

The Scots' next drive would go 53 yards in nine plays but stalled at the Beloit seven-yard line and the visitors had to settle for a 25-yard field goal by Michael Abramson to take a 10-7 lead.

Macalester caught a break on the game's next drive as Beloit marched down the Scots' five where a bad snap resulted in a fumble, which Trey Muraoka recovered at the two.

The break was quickly returned as, three plays later, Macalester turned the ball over on a fumble at their own 14 and the Bucs took advantage, scoring six plays later to take a 14-10 lead with six minutes to play in the half.

Another Macalester fumble would give the hosts the ball back on the Scots' 17  and it took Beloit just three plays to get back in the end zone and take a 21-10 lead into halftime.

The third quarter would prove to be the visitors turnaround as they scored on three of their first four possessions to retake the lead.

The first score came after Ryan Fleming returned an interception, on the third play of the quarter, 28 yards to the Beloit 30 and, three plays later, Bialostok hooked up with Tre Nowaczynski for a 26-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead Bucs' lead to 21-17.

The Macalester defense proved tough throughout the second half and it forced Beloit into a three-and-out on its second possession and a poor punt give the Scots the ball at the home team's 48.

After Bialostok hit Ben Hillman for a 32-yard gain to the Beloit 13, the offense was unable to get into the end zone and pulled within one point, at 21-20, on a 29-yard field goal by Abramson.

The Scots had a three-and-out possession, sandwiched between a pair of the same for Beloit, before taking over on their 25 with 4:08 to play in the quarter, and then Stowell did his damage.

He had back-to-back carries of 14 and 17 yards to open the drive, moving the ball quickly into Buccaneer territory at the 44. When a holding penalty put the Scots in a first-and-20 situation, Stowell got the ball again and he proceeded to break off a season-long 40-yard run for a touchdown and, leading by five, Macalester went for a two-point conversions and Bialostok's pass to Hillmann gave the visitors a 28-21 lead.

From there, it was the defense's turn to shine. Glen Hartford and Philip Wettersten combined for an 11-yard sack to end the third quarter and force a punt and, with the offense eating up the clock in the final quarter, Beloit was limited to just seven players and 31 yards on its lone possession of the final stanza.

In all, the Scots racked up a season-high 517 yards of total offense. Bialostok, who carried the ball a season-low seven times for 43 yards, had a season-high 249 passing yards, completing 14 of 26 passes with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Hillmann topped the 100-yard mark receiving for the first time in his career, catching seven balls for 104 yards.

The Scots' defense allowed just 246 yards of total offense and were led by Fleming, who had 13 tackles to go with his interception.

The win, Maclester's fourth in a row, gives the Scots a 5-1 overall record and a share of first place in the Midwestern Conference North Division at 2-0. They return home next Saturday for a 1 p.m. game versus Lawrence in the team's Tackle Cancer game, part of the Randy Shaver Cancer Foundation campaign to support cancer research.
