Women's Soccer: Second half scoring flurry takes wind out of Macalester's sail

Scots unable to overcome quick trade of second-half goals.

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Macalester and St. Olaf trade goals in a three-minute span early in the second but the Oles got two of the three goals to take a two-goal lead and the Scots were unable to rebound in a 3-1 loss.

Already leading, 1-0, on Chelsea Marsh's first-half goal in the 35th minute, St. Olaf took a 2-0 lead just 6:14 into the second half when Sarah Fisco sent a long ball upfield, which the Macalester defense was unable to control. Madison Van Wylen picked up the ball 35 yards out, split the Scots' two defenders and dripped 20 yards before putting a shot past Emma Toomer's diving effort and off the left post for her third goal of the season.

Just over two minutes later, Macalester got that goal back when Hannah Pollard-Garber brough the ball up the right side through midfield, pass to Lily Jilk in the middle of the field who quickly found Lydia Chodosh on the left side. From 30 yards, Chodosh lofted a high shot which got over St. Olaf goalkeeper Ruth Hesse and just under the crossbar to cut the lead in half.

The Scots were unable to gain any momentum from that goal, however, when the Oles responded just 36 seconds later, getting the ball deep and Kajsa Brindley sent a ball to the top of the six-yard box. Emily Helle got a shot off which was blocked but the rebound went directly to Emily Sierakowski, who tapped home the loose ball.

Despite being unable to generate any serious threats to the St. Olaf lead in the second half, Macalester controlled much of the play over the game's final 45 minutes, holding a 9-5 advantage in shots and a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks, all of which came in the game's final 10 minutes.

The Scots are in action again Wednesday, when they will travel to Carleton for a 4 p.m. match at Bell Field.
