Macalester won its second straight season-opener and beat Crown for the third straight time, opening the 2013 season on a warm Saturday night with a 31-14 victory over the Storm in St. Bonifacius. The Scots held Crown to single touchdowns in the second and fourth quarters and just 20 yards in rushing offense.
Crown took advantage of a short field to strike first, taking a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter on a 15-yard pass. Macalester responded with a 13-play, 57-yard scoring drive, tying things up on a
Samson Bialostok (Jr., North Woodmere, N.Y. / Lawrence) 2-yard run with 5:20 left before intermission. With about a minute to go in the first half, the Scots grabbed the lead for good with an
Auburn Jimenez (Sr., East Los Angeles, Calif. / St. John Bosco) field goal (earlier in the day Jimenez helped lead Mac's cross country team to a first place finish on this same campus at the Crown Invitational).
Another Bialostok 2-run run put the visitors on top 17-7 with the game's only score of the third quarter. Crown got back to within three points with a TD early in the fourth quarter, but Macalester went back up by 10 at 24-14 with a
Zandy Stowell (So., Chippewa Falls, Wis.) 3-yard scoring run. Stowell led the rushing attack with 72 yards on 17 carries.
Daniel Ricci (Sr., Menomonee Falls, Wis. / Brookfield Academy) added another score touchdown run for the Scots to make the final score 31-14.
In addition to running for two scores, Bialostok was 18-for-27 passing for 147 yards, hooking up with
C.J. Smith (Sr., Ashland, Wis.) six times.
Leading the defense was
Nolan Kriegel (Sr., Danbury, Wis. / Webster) with 12 tackles. The Scots made six sacks, including two by
Zach Hauser (So., Port Washington, Wis.).
Macalester led by 10 minutes in possession time and held Crown to four successful third-down conversions.
The Scots try to make it two in a row when they play next Saturday (Sept. 14) at Concordia (Wis.).
